Lucas Torres - Percussionist

Show/Hide Lucas' Bio

A native of Boquerón, Puerto Rico, Lucas’ love of percussion began at the tender age of five. His mother says he used to bang on everything in the house, including pots, pans and the kitchen table. He soon began playing Trap Drums and went on to his true passion -- the congas--! Being culturally sensitive and believing strongly in the importance of cultural heritage, he was the director of a folkloric dance group called ALBORADA in Puerto Rico, performing all over the island including television.

Upon his arrival in New York, he studied at the  Harbor Conservatory for Performing Arts. Over the last twenty years he has played with various Latin bands in New York including Fascinacion, Santiago Ceron, Paquito Guzman, Viti Ruiz, Danny Rivera etc.  His strong commitment to promoting cultural awareness, particularly in Latino youth, has led him into such organizations as La Fiesta Folklorica Puerto Riquena; a non profit organization dedicated to promoting and preserving Puerto Rican Culture in New York City. Lucas was the stage coordinator for the Show 10 years, which is put on every summer at Central Park Summer Stage., featuring many Latino performers from Puerto Rico, such as Danny Rivera, Sophie, Andres Jimenez and many others.  He was also elected Vice President of this organization, in which capacity he served one year.

Lucas put together a group of musicians called Y.A.P.R.E., who played typical folkloric music from Puerto Rico, called Bomba and Plena. This group has performed on many stages in New York. He won an award in 1995 for this effort.

Lucas presently plays percussion, specializing in congas and bongos, with many different musical bands in the North Carolina area, SOULGANIC,THE LATIN PROJECT and TROPIC CULTURE to name a few.   He also choreographed the Bomba and Plena dances for The Carolina Latin Dance Company presentation at the McGlohon Theater in Charlotte in 2009. His strong commitment to his culture led him to a recording with a band named RENACER TROVERO, who’s CD, was released in the summer of 1996. Lucas was an integral member of this band specializing in Folkloric music from Puerto Rico for three years performing on stages in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. Other recording credits are Foragido, Latin Rhythm Devils and most recently All Directions Forward with SOULGANIC. These were Puerto Rican pop, New York Salsa and Funk/Jazz productions.

In addition to his commitment to the Folklore of Puerto Rico Lucas has also been involved with Jazz, Rock and Pop bands through his career.
