About Tommy Lopez

Born in New York City in 1954, Tommy was the middle child of three. His older sister lives in Puerto Rico, which is the origin of his ancestry.  He started playing flute in 5th grade, one flute he shared between 5 guys. He was self taught, initially learning to play by ear and later learning music theory, orchestration and playing techniques. He attended Junior High School in El Barrio, where under Big Band Trumpeter, Shelton Booth, he was inspired to continue with his music. He played in Dance Band and at age 13 aspired to and made it into Music & Art High School. There he studied music, developing his playing skills and playing in band and orchestra. He earned an undergraduate degree in Music Education at City College and his graduate degree at Baruch.

In 1985, in New York, Tommy was part of a flute duet called, Minstrels of the Court, where he and flutist, Dorcas Hernandez, produced and performed in two recording projects. That experience helped Tommy with direction for his later recordings.

In 1989 Tommy moved to Charlotte North Carolina where new inspiration struck and where new people influenced him. Here he met composer Steve (a.k.a "Stevonn"). Steve blessed him with his first midi keyboard which set the path for Tommy. Tommy then began accumulating digital audio equipment and learning how to sequence, arrange and orchestrate for digital audio media. Utilizing Cakewalk products, Korg O3rw, Roland MT 32, Alesis DM5, Tascam DA-20 and a Kurzweil keyboard he began the jouney God had prepared for him. His musical style has developed into a combination of "Latin/jazz-inspirational" style, world music unified in its diversity.

Tommy has done several well known events in Charlotte, including First Night in 1994, 1995 and 1996 and 2008. The University Art’s Festivals in 1996, 1997 and 1998, art events, book signings at the Mint Museum and at Founders Hall, and many other private weddings and affairs. Tommy is also part of Upscale, a musical jazz group in Charlotte which performed with national-recording artists Ashford and Simpson, Peabo Bryson and legendary poet Maya Angelou, Los Trabucos, a traditional Latin band, his own group called Flutepraise which plays inspirational Praise and Worship music and now his latest venture with Borinquen Sublime, a smooth/jazz/Latin/Easy listening band.
